Data Breach – Insurance Against Hacking
A lot of people do not realize that you can buy insurance against hacking and breaches. The exposure is out there and it’s growing. The list of 2015 data breaches seems to grow hourly. It’s hard to believe how big some of them have been:
- Anthem exposed as many as 80 million patients & employee records
- Federal Office of Personnel Management exposed the records of 21.5 million federal workers
- Premara Blue Cross Blue Shield affecting 11.2 million subscribers
- Army National Guard affecting 850,000 current and former members
According to the National Cyber Security Alliance, one in five small businesses falls victim to cyber crime each year. And of those, some 60 percent go out of business within six months after an attack.
So how do I determine/estimate the potential for a data breach at my company? There is a great site to help any business estimate the risk exposure for a data breach. Symantec and Ponemon Institute provide a free Data Breach Calculator to help. There are only a few short questions.
