How long does a claim or accident affect my auto insurance?

How long does an accident stay on my record?Generally, insurance companies look back 5 years when underwriting a new policy. While any type of claim or loss can affect what you pay, it is most often an accident where it was your fault that determines a large cost increase. Generally, when you have an at fault accident, the you are assessed a “surcharge” or “point” by your insurance carrier, that increases your rate by 15% or more for that one accident. This “surcharge” applies for three years in most cases but we’ve seen some companies look back as far as 5 years.
